Wild Florida Islands

By Bill and Mary Burnham
University Press of Florida
Publication date: 2009

This new book will share with readers the special character of Florida’s wild outposts – the islands of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. We hope to inspire a conservation ethic for Florida’s remaining coastal islands among a broad audience, reinforce a code of appropriate behavior for the islands and all wild areas, including a Leave No Trace ethic, so they may be enjoyed without detriment to what makes them special.

We will place each island in the context of Florida’s natural and cultural history, describe public access and improvements, or describe limits on human interaction and reasons for such limits. It will describe each island’s ecosystem and what rare or endangered species may occur there.
